240 The Autoholics Anonymous Car-Free Pledge ping, make an effort to think ahead, so you won't have to drive out in the next week to get something you forgot. Days Two and Three: The Weekend. If you haven't done so yet, use this time to check the routes you'll be doing, by public transport, walking or cycling. There are probably more pleasant routes by bike or foot than simply following the car route. Stretch your legs a bit, go for a ride or a walk, make sure everything's in working order (on you and/or your bike). Day Four: Monday. So can you make this your first car- free day? Try at least to make all your regular journeys without using the car, and if anything comes up unexpect- edly, think: how would I deal with this without a car? What might make it easier? Days Five to Seven: TuesdayThursday. If you've been feeling more tired than usual from all this moving about un- der your own steam, feel good about yourself. You're getting fit, and you'll adjust very soon. All through this week, try to keep a count of the times that you've absolutely had to use the car for something, and each time think how you might avoid it next time. If it's something your job demands on you, try to work with your employers to make things easier for all staff to go car-free. Days Eight to Ten: FridaySunday. Make this a car-free weekend. If you do a big shopping trip, take along a sturdy rucksack or panniers. If you're shopping for a family, can someone else help you? Use the time and your experience of the last week to really prepare to make this week properly car-free. Days Eleven to Fourteen: MondayThursday. Best of luck making this week totally car-free. This is what you took the pledge for. You'll probably be noticing by now how

Day Fifteen: Friday. Well, you've made it. Perhaps you might celebrate your achievement by participating in a Crit- ical Mass, going on in a city near you (a good but incomplete list of rides is available at www.criticalmasshub.com). We hope you can use your experience in these weeks to cut down on your car use in the future.
